About the VIREK Institute
VIREK was established in 1953 as a research institute under the Geological Survey Programme of the Federal Scientific Research
Council (GrPFSRC). In 1985 VIREK, together with the other research institutes, was detached from the Research Council, and was
reorganised as an independent, private foundation situated in Seattle, WA. Since 1972 VIREK has been responsible for a number
of significant developments in the fields of Deep Resonance Research, Remote Sensing and Geophysical Modelling.
VIREK is a private Institute conducting research and development and offering advisory services. Our expertise includes
field surveying, numerical modelling and kognitive on-site analysis of excavation data. The Institute maintains an
interdisciplinary research and educational focus, recognizing that an understanding of the
interaction and interdependence of functional systems in nature requires the attention, not
only of specialists, but also of naturalists and generalists who can bridge different disciplines.
Structural geology, magnetostratigraphy, petrology, geochemistry of endogenous and exogenous processes,
economic geology, phytopaleontology and zoopaleontology, Quaternary geology andenvironmental sciences belong to
the traditional fields of study in the Institute. PhD.studies in the above mentioned specializations were initiated
and the Institute is now recognized as a top postgraduate training centre. Bilateral as well as multilateralco-operation
on a broad spectrum of internationally organized projects (e.g., IGCP, PAGES) and grant projects belongs to the
characteristic features of the present-day Institute of Geology.
